I was terrified of most insects until I ran across Thomas Shahan, a popular photographer who takes macro shots of arachnids and insects. Something about seeing these spiders up close changed me. I realized that there is a whole new world close to the ground, filled with colonies, families, colors, and personalities, that I never knew existed. It is such a humbling experience to be one on one with a Phidippus audax, or a Honey Bee.
I started my macro adventure with a vintage 50mm prime lens with a reverse ring and added tubes. My flash was comprised of a vintage flash with a paper towel taped on it so it would defuse the light. I now own a professional macro lens, but still finding myself going back to that old prime glass.
I am still working on my place in the macro world. There are so many subjects in the macro-world waiting to be highlighted.
